Growing and Shrinking Patterns Study Sheet

Growing and Shrinking Patterns Study Sheet
A growing pattern happens when something is added each time. You can have a growing pattern with pictures, objects, shapes, and even numbers. Look at the following number pattern. How does it grow?
1, 4, 7, 10...
Think of addition with growing patterns.
1+1=2
2+1=3
3+1=4
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A shrinking pattern happens when something is taken away each time.
12-3=9
9-3=6
6-3=3
3-3=0
*************************
An architect is designing a neighbourhood of houses.  Describe the architects design pattern.

Sample answer:
Number of Houses
Number of Shapes
1
2
2
4
3
6
4
8
5
10

The house pattern is an increasing pattern.  I would need 10 shapes to build the 5th house.
I used a t-chart to help me organize the data (I will be able to fill in a blank t-chart).
The number of shapes is growing by 2 each time.
0+2=2
2+2=4
4+2=6
6+2=8
8+2=10
